Gamm Facts

Founded in 1984 as Alias Stage by seven members of the graduating class of Trinity Rep Conservatory.
Performs as artistic collective in abandoned mill building in Providence’s Olneyville neighborhood. Moves to second mill building after first building is destroyed by fire in December 1989.
Alias relocates to Jewelry District in downtown Providence in 1993; shifts from artistic collective to formally structured organization with board of directors.
Alias accepts naming gift from Feinstein Family Trust in 1998, in honor of late actress and arts supporter Sandra Gamm. Theater renamed The Sandra Feinstein-Gamm Theatre (The Gamm).
Theater grows in popularity and outgrows 75-seat house.
The Gamm proposes to City of Pawtucket that abandoned Pawtucket National Guard Armory on Exchange Street be used as regional center for arts and arts education, with The Gamm as lead tenant.
October 2000: Pawtucket Armory Association (PAA), a non-profit corporation, formed to guide proposal.
December 2002: PAA buys armory from City of Pawtucket for $1.
The Gamm announces hiatus following first production of 2002-2003 Season in Providence (Tennessee William’s Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.)
Fall 2002: Gamm board hires Tony Estrella as artistic director; and Yvonne Seggerman as managing director that spring.
May 2003: The Gamm moves administration to temporary office in Pawtucket; hosts first annual fundraiser and announces 2003-04 Season.
July 2003: PAA begins renovations to The Gamm’s new home in Pawtucket Armory annex.
Gamm stages first show of Season 19, Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, at La Salle Academy, due to construction delays.
November 2003: Renovations completed in time for second show, holiday staging of A Child’s Christmas in Wales.
September 2005: Gamm opens Season 21 as a new member of New England Area Theatre (NEAT), a bargaining unit of the Actors Equity Association — the union of professional stage actors in the United States.
